Airgun Review – Walther Rotex RM8 Varmint

What do you need to get out shooting or hunting with a good chance of making it a successful trip?

Consistency is key!

Without a consistent pellet velocity and placement you will have very little chance of success.

A pre-charged pneumatic rifle, PCP for short, is a great way to achieve accurate consistent shot placement.
You may be worried though as PCP’s can cost a fortune. Things like the awesome FX Impact costs over £1500.

Not to worry!

The Walther Rotex RM8 can be kitted out with a a good telescopic scope for under £500.

Does that sound to good to be true? Will the build quality be affected?

Well I have to say the headline for this  rifle is that it is great quality and brilliant value for money.

Ok, you probably want to know a bit more than that.

The Walther RM8 on test is chambered in .22. This gives you approximately 180 shots from it’s 200cc 200bar fully charged buddy bottle style non-detachable tank.
I love the high capacity of a bottle but don’t forget this does mean more effort when using a hand pump.

The one thing I would recommend is to get a fill probe plug, ebay is your friend!

That many shots can easily keep you going on a day at the range or even a few days out hunting.

The first thing you may look at in this rifle is the stock, the varmint version is a blank robust rubberized polymer stock with a great textured feel for use rain or shine.

Don’t worry wood loves they do a wood stock one as well.

The polymer is very hard wearing and  will retain the quality look even when it’s not been treated well like an old work horse.
At the front you will find a weaver rail, of which I recommend you mount a bipod.
The stock, a pistol grip through hole style, is very comfortable and the overall shape and balance allows you to quickly shoulder the rifle.
From the grip the manual safety, at the rear, can easily be disabled.
Enabling is slightly harder, I do find you do have to release your grip but does that really matter?

The classic style bolt action means every round chambered is a real joy to make.
Chambering can also be done quietly and quickly.

On firing the Walther rotex rm8 makes a very nice clean crack as the pellet leaves the barrel.
However a moderator is a must for hunting.

The magazine could not be simpler! Nothing to go wrong, nothing to maintain and the added bonus, it’s so cheap. The only downside with it is capacity, only holding 8 pellets.

The trigger is a very satisfying 2 stage adjustable configuration, it breaks predictably and consistently.
The only downside to some is that it is polymer, this could be changed but I don’t mind it.

The barrel is 500mm long with a 1/2inch UNF thread at the end, as standard it’s fitted with muzzle break.  This will in most cases be replaced by a moderator to leave you with that silent, pinpoint accurate rifle.

The overall length of the rifle is 1040mm (41 inches) and it weighs in at 3.6kg (7.95 lbs) so is slightly on the heavy side in comparison with other rifles this length.

Out on the range this rifle performs!

The RM8 is a very consistent rifle that is able to maintain pellet on pellet performance.
It’s a real joy to use this rifle and it will perform when out in the field.

I believe the Walther Rotex RM8 is one of the best value for money rifles currently on the market and this is not detrimental to it’s performance or quality. The polymer stock can mean it’s treated like a real work horse and will not be out of place on a farm.

Highlights
Stock – very good polymer example
Trigger – well defined adjustable 2 stage trigger
Bolt – a real joy to use
Magazine – simple and cheap
Weight – slightly overweight but easy to handle
Shoots – consistent and fun
