The Flying Duck Dummy is a canvas bird like training dummy with a free flapping head, wings and throwing cord.
This really is an excellent dummy for training dogs to retrieve and comes in two sizes, a 400g and 600g variant with a number of colour combinations to choose from.
The long cord and solid body mass allows you to constantly produce great throws. You can really chuck this dummy, I can throw the duck dummy further than all my other standard canvas ones.
On throwing this dummy it falls very realistically from the sky, similar to a real bird being shot.
On hitting the ground it often tumbles allowing your dog to make a good mark. It also does a great job of raising the enthusiasm levels.
On retrieving the head flaps around and the wings can obscure the dogs face and eyes in a realistic manor.
This can be a very valuable tool when training especially before moving onto cold game as you do not have the added distraction of feather to contend with.
This dummy is ideal for both land or water training, it floats high in the water for ease of retrieval, floats belly side up and is easily seen in the water.
The bird shape body allows the dog to get used to picking up birds centrally, with a weirder mouth position than a traditional dummy.
As well as marked retrieves I also found this dummy very useful for steadiness work. Throwing the duck dummy over the dogs head can help increase the pressure on steadiness.
The Firedog dummies are often slightly more expensive than other cheaper clones. Do not worry! It is worth spending the extra as other dummies I have purchased around the same time are already starting suffer, the Firedog after a quick wash looks like new.
